A collapsible retaining bar for a covered lorry load platform comprises a lower element (1) which is releasably secured to the load platform (3) and an upper element (2) which is pivotally attached to the tarpaulin roof frame (5). The two elements are secured together in end-to-end alignment by a locking mechanism consisting of rod (7) which can be moved along the longitudinal axis of the lower element by a handle (10). In use, the upper end (7b) of the rod locates onto a hook (2b) in the upper element (2). The lower rod and (7a) engages into a mounting (8a) on the load platform.
