The closure element for hermetically sealing a can comprises a membrane with a flat part (11) intended for covering an aperture in the can. The element furthermore has a collar part (14) and a tear-off tab (15) which is connected to the membrane and is a separate piece which consists of a tongue part (19) and a foot part (18) and is bonded or welded with its foot part onto a region (17) of the collar part (14) located below an intended separation line (16) and, with its tongue part (19) is bent away from the collar part (14) towards the flat membrane part (11). The deep-drawn membrane of the closure element can be provided with a separately punched-out tear-off tab (15); or the tear-off tab (15) can firstly be stamped out of a flat foil, then bent over and bonded on in the region (17) of the collar part (14), whereupon the membrane itself is punched out and the connecting part between said membrane and the tear-off tab (15) is cut off. After deep-drawing, an intended separation line (16) is formed in the collar part (14) by perforating or cutting. The part of the tab located above the intended separation line (16) can then be removed. <IMAGE>
