The method and apparatus serve to loosen and extract bulk materials, which have become compacted by physical influences and do not flow to a suction nozzle of a suction conveyor unit as a result of the normal action of gravity, as may occur during the emptying of cement from ship's bunkers. In order for good efficiency to be achieved in a suction conveying unit, the material is loosened, in the region of the mouth of the suction nozzle (13), by two rollers (1) rotating in opposite directions and provided with loosening tools (5), in a space defined by a suction housing (4). In this arrangement, the material is fed to the mouth (13) of the suction nozzle, directed between the rollers, substantially tangentially to the mutually facing enveloping circular regions of the loosening tools 5 and there picked up by the flow of suction air. <IMAGE>
