To determine the degree of ventilation of a filter cigarette (10), a precisely determined amount (Q) of air is sucked off at the free filter end of said cigarette. In this process, that end face which is situated opposite the suction side of the filter cigarette (10) and a section (x) of the latter is surrounded with an enclosing chamber (12) which seals it from the external atmosphere. To avoid a falsification of the measurement result by the measuring device (16), air is supplied to the chamber (12) by means of a vacuum pump (5) during the measuring operation in an amount such that an equally high pressure prevails in said chamber (12) as in the external atmosphere. The amount of air fed to the chamber (12) in this set steady state is then compared with the amount (Q) of air simultaneously sucked off by means of the vacuum pump (5) at the end of the filter cigarette (10) in order to determine the degree of ventilation of the section (x) of tobacco surrounded in a sealing manner by said chamber (12). <IMAGE>
