The press has an upright cylinder (1) which contains a pressure piston (3). Compressed water can be fed to the lower end of the cylinder (1) via a pipe (15) in order to raise the pressure piston (3) and to press out the wet mass of paper situated between the said piston (3) and a lid (6) which is mounted on the cylinder (1). The lid can be removed to permit removal of a pressed-out briquette in each case. A valve (13, 14) is present which permits feeding of compressed water into the cylinder or the draining off of water situated in the cylinder. The press has a low weight and a small volume, can be easily operated without effort and makes it possible to produce paper briquettes which are of outstanding quality. <IMAGE>
