PURPOSE:To obtain an alkanepolyol, especially ethylene glycol at relatively mild conditions in high selectivity ratio and to recover a rhodium compound in an active state, by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a rhodium-based catalyst and a pyrrolidinone derivative. CONSTITUTION:In preparing the titled substance by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a rhodium-based compound, the reactin is carried out by adding a compound e.g., 1,2-bis(2-oxopyrrolidinyl)ethane shown by the formula (l is the number of C in the same molecule except pyrrolidinone group; m is the number of pyrrolidinone groups and >=2; n is the number of rings except pyrrolidinone group or double bonds). The amount of the compound shown by the formula added is an amount to give 1-100mol ratio of it to rhodium atom, and the concentration of the catalyst is preferably 1X10<-1>-1X10<-5>gram atom/l. The reacton is carried out under pressure by heating at 30-1,000kg/cm<2>G at 100-300 deg.C. |
