The invention relates to a brake lining for friction brakes, comprising a main body and a friction lining applied to the latter. These linings have hitherto been produced, at least partially, from asbestos. Asbestos is a danger to health in dust form. It is therefore the object of the invention to provide an asbestos-free brake lining. This object is achieved by the fact that the friction lining consists essentially of a layer of polyimide, which per se has a high friction coefficient, and this can be increased further by additives. The invention can be used in all friction brakes in fixed machines and in vehicles. An illustrative embodiment is depicted in the drawing.
