The invention relates to a switching tube for an inclination balance. In this switching tube (3), a spherically electrically conductive switching element moves, particularly a mercury pearl (6). When this switching element is moving, it is used for connecting a common contact (Sh) to individual contact areas (Sa-Sg). To increase the reliability and accuracy of indication, the switching tube exhibits a concave inner wall along which the switching element is intended to move. The individual contact areas (Sa-Sg) are arranged adjacent to the common contact (Sh) in the longitudinal axis of this concave inner wall. To determine the inclination position of points rotated through right angles from one another, the switching tube can be constructed to be horseshoe-shaped; the longitudinal axes of the arms of the horseshoe, in turn, are arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the connecting elbow of the horseshoe. Both the two arms and the elbow connecting them then have in each case a concave inner wall with a common contact and individual contact areas adjacent thereto. <IMAGE>
