PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF PENTAFLUOROBENZYL ALCOHOL

A novel process for the preparation of pentafluorobenzyl alcohol of the formula I in which chloropentafluorobenzene of the formula II is reacted with magnesium turnings to give the Grignard compound of the formula III followed by reaction with gaseous formaldehyde, which process is characterised in that the reaction is carried out in a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons and ethers at temperatures between 0 and 25 DEG C.
