To directly recover metallic zinc from zinc swarf or dust, especially of small size, the swarf or dust is first leached with an acidic solution containing ammonium ions, e.g. a solution of ammonium chloride, of pH 4.1 to 4.65, the swarf or dust so treated is separated and then agglomerated to form briquettes, and the briquettes are introduced into a smelting furnace. By this process, it is possible to avoid the problem of oxidation which arises when zinc swarf or dust is added as such to a smelting furnace.
|
