The invention concerns a method for semicontinuous casting of metal. The method involves periodic feeding of a molten metal 4 in the direction from bottom to top into a chill mould 1 as far as a starting body 2, holding of the metal 4 in the chill mould 1 during formation of the edge zone 6 of predetermined thickness for the material, and pulling of the material out from the chill mould 1 for a certain length while at the same time feeding a molten metal volume into the chill mould 1, corresponding to the length pulled out. The method is characterised in that, after initially filling the chill mould 1 with the molten metal 4 and after filling the chill mould 1 with metal 4 after each withdrawal of material from the chill mould for the pull-out length, one continues the supplying of the molten metal 4 and removes to a zone outside the starting body 2 a molten metal volume making up 0.1-0.9 of the volume of the work space of the chill mould 1, after which during the holding period one returns a portion of said molten metal volume at least one time to the material being moulded, and again removes this portion to the zone outside the starting body 2, while during the final phase of moulding of the material one introduces the major portion of said molten metal volume into the material being moulded, and interrupts the movement of the molten metal 4 until the material has solidified. The invention can be used during semicontinuous casting of metal for production of billets by pulling them out from the chill mould in the direction from bottom to top. <IMAGE> |
