PURPOSE:To reduce the number of dictionary pattern for verification processing, by operating successively degrees of resemblance between compensated input pattern and dictionary patterns. CONSTITUTION:A picture is divided to two-dimensional small region units, and information obtained by compressing them is used as an input pattern, and standard patterns from dictionary memory 28, which are obtained by information compression of small region units, and the input pattern which allows the ambiguity to compensate lattice point label code stored in a label code table 22 are inputted to a resemblance degree extracting circuit 29. These patterns are used to perform a successive resemblance degree operation, and a prescribed threshold is set to perform the pattern matching, and a symbol is recognized and is stored in a symbol recognition table 30. |
