Precise determination of the position of, for example, an artillery gun using the sound ranging system by measuring the muzzle report requires access to wind data that is representative for the part of the ether where the sound wave propagates to the system's microphone base. The invention relates to a method of determining such representative wind data. Using the sound ranging system, a report is measured generated in a suitable known position as the unknown target. The wind speed w and bearing angle α are determined by an iterated calculation process. A direction angle β to the target and a target distance R are calculated for varying values of α and w within selected estimated intervals which are ever decreasing intervals for each repetition, until for a pair of values for α and w calculated values for β and R closely correspond to the actual known values for the direction angle and the target distance.
