The machine gun has two complete weapons (200) in a cradle (10), in a common weapon housing (70). The weapons are permanently connected to one another in a positively locking manner in the region of their base pieces (201) by means of a mechanical coupling device (120.2), and are coupled to one another in a positively-locking manner in the region of collars (216) (on the respective barrel 214) by means of a hydraulic coupling device (120.1) while firing is occurring. The mechanical coupling device (120.2) is part of a transmission (122) for driving the two breeches (230). The latter have a straight tension characteristic and a rotatable breech head (238) with locking means. Whilst both weapons (200) - they are constructed as recoil loaders - can move axially for alternating positive running in the weapon housing (70), the weapon housing (70) is guided during a central preliminary movement buffering (87) and by means of a recoil running-out spring (89) in the cradle (10) for axial to-and-fro movement. At least in the respective outside region (202), each base piece (201) is shaped as a secondary part (270), which, with a stator (260) which is arranged in an adjacent manner on the cradle side, forms a linear motor (250) in each case. When opening fire, the linear motors (250) replace a clamping device and, in the event of predetermined control, enable the operation of both weapons (200) above or below a natural, system-intrinsic cadence region. <IMAGE>
