A cooling device for air-conditioning installations or the like, in particular for evaporation coolers, with an airflow which flows through a housing and into which there projects a pipe coil system of a primary circuit, which is spanned in a spray chamber by a spray device of a secondary circuit and is arranged above a receiving basin for possibly heated secondary water, is to be improved with regard to its action in winter operation. To this end, there is provided in the cooling device a water container which is separate from the receiving basin for the secondary water and is part of the closed primary circuit. The receiving basin for the secondary water has at least one common surface with the water container, at least one transverse wall and/or one box bottom serving as common surface. Moreover, a register pipe can end at the sump formed in the water container by the primary water, which preferably adjoins sumps of different temperature level. It is consequently possible to keep the primary water from the pipe coil system in a container of the cooling device above freezing point, a heat exchange taking place between the sump water in the water container of the primary water and the secondary water.
