The pneumatic brake device for rail vehicles, especially rail locomotives, has a three-pressure brake control valve (5) with a main air line chamber (4) and a reference pressure chamber (7). In the connection from the main air line (1) to the main air line chamber (4) a shut-off valve (3) is incorporated, which can be arbitrarily closed only below a pressure level in the main air line (1) corresponding to full braking. Into a connection of large cross-section, provided in addition to a usual filling device for the reference pressure chamber (7), between the main air line chamber (4) and the reference pressure chamber (7) an arbitrarily operatable shut-off valve (22) and an overflow valve (20) are inserted in series, the overflow valve (20) closing in the event of the pressure in the reference pressure chamber falling below a certain pressure limit of, for example, 2 bar. A further, arbitrarily operatable shut-off valve (17) monitors a flow cross-section enlargement of the release nozzle (13) of the three- pressure brake control valve (5). By corresponding actuation of the shut-off valves a normal, conventional operation of the pneumatic brake device, a post-braking valve action, an adjustment in the event of an overloaded reference pressure chamber (7) and an arbitrary brake release in the event of emergency or forced braking are possible. At the same time any leaking of the shut-off valves cannot cause failure of the pneumatic brake device. <IMAGE>
