For guiding workpieces to be tempered through a tempering furnace (1), the latter has a transport device (10) which is designed as a double continuous chain. Fastened to the individual chain links are holding elements (9) provided with hooks (16), in which elements the workpieces (8) are hung at the furnace inlet. For adaptation to the respective workpiece shape, the holding elements (9) have joints (15), and, by means of a control surface arrangement (17), the ends of a holding element pair, which have the hooks (16), can be pivoted relative to one another. <IMAGE>
