A device in the form of a bridge or a stand with a bearing arm (1) spans the region of the stored boards or blocks (2a and 2b), and the support table (3). The slides (4 and 5), which are mounted on the device and are displaceable horizontally in all directions, move jointly or individually over the piles (2a and 2b). The lifting units (6 and 7) are lowered and the clamping or suction units (10 and 11) move together to the width of the board. By clamping or suction, the board is lifted and conveyed transversely and the clamping or suction units move apart to the predetermined board spacing. The lowering and depositing onto the support table then take place at the desired board spacing. By means of the live rings mounted on the lifting units (6 and 7), the piles can be placed at any desired angle relative to the support table. <IMAGE>
