PURPOSE:To obtain a 1,4-dialkylbenzene compound in high selectivity, by alkylating, transalkylating or disproportionating an aromatic compound in the presence of a crystalline zeolite modified with a rare earth compound or tellurium compound. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic compound is alkylated, transalkylated or disproportionated to give a 1,4-dialkylbenzene compound, e.g. p-ethyltoluene or p-cymene, containing 1,4-dialkylbenzene isomers expressed by the formula (R<1> is methyl, ethyl or iso-propyl; R<2> is ethyl or iso-propyl) in excess of the thermodynamic equilibrium concentration. In the process, a crystalline zeolite having at least 12 silica/alumina ratio and 1-12 control index, e.g. ZSM-5 or ZSM-11, previously modified with a rare earth compound, e.g. a compound of Y or La, or a tellurium compound is used as a catalyst. |
