<p>PURPOSE:To recognize characters with high accuracy, by dividing the contour lines of characters into terminal point segments, concave segments and convex segments respectively and then coding these segments in order of emergence to obtain the matching between these codes and code trains of reference characters. CONSTITUTION:A character pattern obtained through an optical scan is stored to a pattern observing and storing means 1. A direction train detecting means 2 tracks the contour of the character pattern to obtain a direction train 3a (expressed in freeman codes) of contour points. A tangent direction train detecting means 3 averages the directions of contour points contiguous to each other to obtain a tangent direction train 3b. A refraction degree train detecting means 4 obtains a refraction degree train 3c from the train 3b. A refracted part train detecting means 5 detects the terminal point part and a convex/concave refracted part 3d. A segment train detecting means 6 divides the contour lines of characters into terminal point segments and convex and concave segments. Then the matching is secured between a segment code train 3f in which the above-mentioned segments are arranged in order of emergence and the standard pattern code train of a dictionary 8 to decide the character name of an input pattern.</p> |
