PURPOSE:To produce atomized iron powder of medium apparent density having excellent moldability by forming molten iron to powder contg. much fine powder by a water atomization method in which the powdering rate in high, subjecting the same to a finish reduction treatment to flocculate the powder then subjecting the powder to weak disintegration. CONSTITUTION:The jets 4 of the liquid formed with plural liquid injection nozzles 3 in an atomizing device are deflected with the tapered part 1' of a creeping flow guide 1 to form film-like flow 5 having the focusing angle beta smaller by <=3 deg. than the focusing angle alpha of the jets 4, by which the molten iron 2 flowing down in the guide 1 is pulverized and the green powder of 2.8-3.0g/cm<2> apparent density is obtained. The green powder is reduced for >=120min. in a reducing gaseous atmosphere of 800-1,000 deg.C and >=100N<3>/t, whereby the reduced cake of <=50mm. layer is obtained. The cake is weakly disintegrated, whereby the iron powder having grain size distributions consisting of 12-19% +100 meshes, <=19% -325 meshes, and the balance -100-+325 meshes, 2.5- 2.7kg/cm<3> apparent density, and <=0.11% weight loss by reduction which indicates surface cleanliness of particle and contg. <=0.007wt% C and >=99% Fe is obtained. |
