PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of NOx contained in exhaust gas without adversely affecting the fuel consumption rate of a compression ignition engine and avoid contamination of the air suction system and lubricating oil by an arrangement wherein the air containing a large amount of nitrogen content is supplied into the combustion chamber, whilst the air containing a great deal of oxygen content is supplied into the outside thereof. CONSTITUTION:The air drawn through an air cleaner 1 by the suction effect produced by a piston 8 passes through a suction passage 2 into a suction manifold 3. On its way to the manifold 3, the air is allowed to contact with an oxygen separation membrane 14 installed in the suction passage 2 and is subjected to a suction effect of a fan 17 so as to be deprived of its oxygen content so that the air with a high nitrogen content can be supplied into a combustion chamber 9. Therefore, if a quantity of oxygen required to combust the amount of fuel injected by a fuel injection valve 12 is secured, the air with a high nitrogen content contains inert gases such as so-called return flow exhaust gases etc., thereby reducing the combustion temperature relatively by a value corresponding to the resultant increase in the thermal capacity. |
