PURPOSE:To contrive uniformization of the necessary wire extension length by detecting respectively the contact of a nozzle and base plate, and the wire and base plate by applying a voltage between the nozzle of a welding torch and the base plate, then by applying a voltage between the wire and base plate. CONSTITUTION:A voltage is impressed between a nozzle 1 and base plate 3 by pulling in a wire 2 after positioning the nozzle 1 of a welding torch at the adequate distance of the above of the base plate 3. The voltage is then cut OFF by detecting a nozzle touch signal when the nozzle 1 and base plate 3 are abutted by moving the nozzle 1 to the direction of the base plate 3. A wire touch sensor is in succession made by impressing a voltage between the wire 2 and base plate 3 after pulling back the nozzle 1 by a fixed distance L from the base plate 3. Thereafter, the voltage is cut OFF by stopping the feeding of the wire 2, when the contact of the wire 2 and base plate 3 is detected by sending out the wire 2 slowly in the base plate 3 direction. The wire extension length can thus be uniformized.
