A plate comprises a moulded material layer with the symbols embossed in it, and a relatively brittle second layer adhered to one face of the first over the area not forming the symbols. The first layer is pref. of dark-coloured polyethylene which does not whiten when stressed so that the symbols remain dark, while the second layer is reflective to increase symbol visibility. - The second layer is pref. of ground glass between two sheets of clear PVC, the glass providing brittleness so that the layer is severed at the symbol boundaries when the laminate is embossed in a press, the second layer areas over the symbols then being removed.
