PURPOSE:To prevent a shade from being produced at the outside of the width of an original, by providing a repetitive pattern on the same plane as the original in the main scanning direction, discriminating the reading region of the original from this pattern, and making the region except the original coincident with the background of the original. CONSTITUTION:The repetitive pattern 14 is provided at the main scanning position at the reading position of an original. After a guide plate 2 is positioned in response to the width of the original, the position of the pattern 14 provided on a line 13 on a guide surface 12 is sought before the original reaches the scanning line 13. Since the pattern number of the pattern 14 is predetermined, the boundary between the innermost black pattern having a prescribed number pictured on an image pickup element and the white part of the guide surface 12 is assumed as reading region. After the reading region is set, the reading scanning of the original is started, the original of a prescribed width in the reading region is read to determine whether the background of the original in the reading region is white or black. The region outside the reading region is set to the color of the background. Thus, even if the size of the original is small, the region except the width of the original is reproduced in the same color as the background of the original. |
