A plurality of containers (1) with irradiated fuel elements or other radioactive material are stored in the tubular shafts (5). The tubular shafts (5) are joined together movably by means of mandral guides (8, 9) which are welded onto the guide ribs (2). The mandral guides (8, 9) permit the heat expansion of the tubular shafts (5), independently of each other in the vertical direction. The space (10) formed between the container bottom (13) and the store bottom (12) serves in each case as a flow chamber for the cooling medium which flows through the cooling ducts (6) formed by the guide ribs (2). The tensions in the storage rack are eliminated by the possibility of vertical expansion of the tubular shafts (5) and by the improved flow conditions.
