The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the electric discharge machining of a workpiece, comprising a multistrand wire (1, 2, 3), a multiplicity of wires being fed separately from respective wire sources (5, 6, 7) to a wire running track and being assembled into a bundle (4) by means of wire guides (8, 9, 10; 16, 17). The bundle (4) of wires (1, 2, 3), which traverse a fluid-rinsed cutting zone established between machining electrode guides (13, 14), forms a single travelling electrode (4) for the electric discharge machining of a workpiece (15). The wires of the cutting zone are received in a collecting point while being held adequately stretched between the electrode guides (13, 14). The workpiece (15) is displaced transversely with respect to the axis of the travelling wires in relation to the bundle (4) to introduce a desired profile into the workpiece (15). Preferably, the wires (1, 2, 3) of the bundle (4) are twisted. A rotary mould may also be provided in order to shape the running track of the wires (1, 2, 3) so that the bundle (4) has a predetermined cross-sectional contour which is separated from the wall of the workpiece (15) by means of the machining gap (G). <IMAGE>
