Gear-change system for a bicycle with a gear-change lever which is mounted rotatably on a journal attached in an upright position to an attachment component and a locking device arranged between the gear- change lever and a fixed component, e.g. the attachment component, for the purpose of securing the gear-change system in the individual gear- change positions. The locking device includes a first and a second locking element, a first catch component with a number of locking depressions for the engagement of the first locking element and a second catch component with a number of locking depressions for the engagement of the second locking element. The first and the second locking element are symmetrical with respect to the journal and the first and the second catch component are arranged in such a way that when a locking element engages with a depression of a catch component the other locking element is disengaged from the depressions, arranged offset in the circumferential direction, of the other catch component, as a result of which a greater distance can be present between the individual locking depressions.
