In a reaction tube, which is generally elongated, a reducing gas stream is caused to flow along the axis of the reaction tube at an elevated temperature, and a metal halide gas stream diluted with an inert carrier gas is caused to flow in the same direction as the stream of reducing gas but at a different velocity from said stream of reducing gas. The two gas streams make laminar contact with one another and form an unstable boundary layer region between themselves. In this region the metal halide gas is reduced and fine metal particles having uniform particle size are thereby formed.
