The liquid filter has a radially permeated, hollow cylindrical filter element (10) rotatable about its axis, which element, within the filter housing (2), separates a filtrate chamber from a dirty liquid chamber. A dirt discharge groove (20) arranged in parallel to the axis of the filter element (10) forms with the filter element a dirt discharge channel (23), which, for backwashing, can be connected via a shut-off valve (40) to a dirt discharge line (32). A drive device (41) is equipped with a ratchet (42), which on the take-off side is coupled as a rotary drive to the filter element (10) and on the driven side interacts with the control device of the shut-off valve (40). The drive device can swing from a first end position, limited by a stop, corresponding to the closing position of the shut-off valve (40), against the force of a pull-back spring to a second end position limited by a stop with simultaneous opening of the shut-off valve (40). <IMAGE>
