The explosive charge for ammunition is designed for progressive combustion so that the rate of gas generation conforms to the required speed. The main charge contains microcharges acting as initiators which expand when the explosive front advances towards them. They can be spherical, with an outer layer of conventional explosive around a core of initiator material. These microcharges contain heavy metal azides e.g. silver or lead azide, tricinate or mercury fulminate or mixtures of these substances with a binder and phlegmators. The proportions of the components of the microcharges are specified. The microcharges can be spherical or cube shaped crystallites weighing between 10 and 100 mg, and they form under 10 per cent of the main explosive charge.
|
