A mobile sensor can be withdrawn from the header of a tubular heat exchanger, esp. in a nuclear plant, without entering the header under fault conditions. A dummy sensor on a flexible tube is introduced into a guide tube and an aligned tube of the heat exchanger into which the dummy sensor is fixed. The mobile sensor is released from the tube and then slid along the tube of the dummy sensor to an access opening. the sensor can be returned to its position in a similar manner.
