Use of conventional electrodes and direct current often results in iontophoretic burns on the patient which generally occur at the negative electrode. In order to avoid such burns, at least that area in which the negative electrode (1) is in contact with the skin (2) is covered with an intermediate layer (4) of an electrically conducting, metal-free, porous, preferably moistened material which is more than three millimetres thick. On use of this structure of the negative electrode, the size of the positive electrode can be increased, so that the current used for the treatment can be increased while at the same time the adverse effects can be reduced. It is possible to use positive and negative electrodes arranged alternately and next to one another. <IMAGE>
