Self-contained solar-powered portable lighting units, especially for marine use, each have a rechargeable battery (11) which is charged up by a solar battery (12) via a reverse-blocking diode (14) during daylight and a lamp (10) which is energised by the recharged battery (11) during darkness, when the diode (14) effectively isolates the solar battery (12) from the rechargeable battery (11). The lamp (10) is switched on during darkness and off during daylight by being connected to the rechargeable battery (11) either directly (Fig. 1) or indirectly (Fig. 9) via normally closed contacts 17 of a relay (16) of which the solenoid (15) is connected across the solar battery (12). The lighting units may be marine, for example, port and starboard side lighting units, bow and stern lighting units, buoys, or non-marine. <IMAGE> |
