An electronic high frequency connection unit has a controlled oscillator 1 with a frequency which can be varied via inputs 10-15. The oscillator 1 produces complementary output signals 16, 17, which control an inverter 4 via a driver circuit 3. The output voltage of the inverter is fed to a transformer or coil 5 which directly drives a vapour discharge lamp 6. In this way the operating frequency and thereby the luminance of the lamp 6 can be changed by changing the frequency of the driver circuit 3 by direct control 10-15 of the oscillator 1 and the voltage of the lamp can be kept essentially constant while the current is reduced.
