PURPOSE:To prepare an optically active beta-hydroxy ester useful as an intermediate raw material of antibacterial and antitumor drug, in high yield and purity, by using a microbial strain belonging to various yeasts including Candida genus, etc. CONSTITUTION:The beta-hydroxy ester of formulaI(X is alpha-CH3 or beta-CH3; Y is alpha-OH or beta-OH). The compound of formulaIcan be prepared by contacting the compound of formula II (R1 is alkyl, aryl, alkeny, aralkenyl, aralkyl, allyl, alkyloxycarbonyl or furanyl; R2 is alkyl or aralkyl) with microorganisms belonging to Candida genus, Endomyces genus, Endomycopsis genus, Hansenula genus, Kloeckera genus, etc. or their cells, thereby converting the compound of formula II to the compound of formula III. |
