A method and apparatus for forming a stack of material over a flat storage area, which can be unloaded by means of a continuous unloading transporter moving back and forth. The apparatus comprises a continuous lateral unloading transporter (4) which is supplied by a main continuous transporter (5), a so- called stock transporter, moving back and forth, and this is characterised in that it comprises means for adjusting the feed rates of the said lateral unloading transporter (4) in such a manner as to reduce it gradually at the ends of the stack and to accumulate in a buffer store the instantaneous excess of material resulting from these feed rate reductions at the ends so as to recycle this excess to the said lateral unloading transporter. <IMAGE>
