PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of ethylene glycol, etc, under relatively mild condition, in high rate of reaction and yield, in one step, by reacting formaldehyde dialkyl acetal with carbon monoxide in the presence of a solid acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The alkoxyacetic acid ester of formula ROCH2COOR can be perpared selectively by reacting the formaldehyde dialkyl acetal of formula ROCH2OR (R is alkyl) with carbon monoxide usually at 50-250 deg.C in the presence of a slide acid catalyst such as strongly acidic cation exchane resin, clay mineral, zeolite, solidified acid, inorganic oxide, etc. To carry out the reaction more smoothly, an inert solvent such as aromatic hydrocarbon, etc. may be used as the reaction solvent. The carbon monoxide may be a pure one or diluted with inert gas such as nitrogn, and the partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the reaction system is preferably 50-150kg/cm<2>. |
