The shield for protecting the payload of a rocket from the rockets of an adjacent stage during deployment comprises individual shells (11,12,13) each made up of a rigid frame covered by a flexible sheet. The shells form an envelope which is secured to at least part of the periphery of the load (2). The shells are held together about the load by at least two belts (5,6) which are destructible on command allowing the load to be released into orbit. The shells and belts are in the space between the load and an outer protective housing.
