PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled glass fiber with superior optical purity, by putting an aggregate of fine glass particles deposited on a starting base material in a sintering furnace cleaned by baking at a high temp. and by sintering the aggregate. CONSTITUTION:Fine glass particles synthesized by subjecting gaseous starting materials to flame hydrolysis with an oxyhydrogen burner 4 are deposited on a starting base material 2 which is being rotated by a rotating system 3 in a container 1 to form an aggregate 5 of fine particles. The aggregate 5 is put in a sintering furnace 7 cleaned by burning at 1,200-1,600 deg.C in an inert gaseous atmosphere contg. 0-1vol% gaseous halogen or halide, and it is made transparent by sintering. Thus, a glass fiber for optical transmission with low water content, low pollutant concn. and a correctly parabolic refractive index distribution is obtd. |
