PURPOSE:To measure catenary quantity continuously, quantitatively and automatically by irradiating a light beam onto a strip and detecting the moving distance of the light spot on the strip owing to fluctuations in the catenary quantity with a solid state image sensing element. CONSTITUTION:The laser beam emitted from a laser oscillator 3 is irradiated on the point P on a strip 2. In this state, catenary quantity fluctuates and when the catenary quantity decreases by L, the light spot P on the strip 2 moves from P1 to P2.
