In the projection of a total image consisting of a plurality of component images each of which is projected by a slide projector, the aim is for no transitions, for example dark or bright edge strips, to be visible between the individual component images. In the so-called soft edge method, the individual component images are projected overlapping in their edge region. In order to avoid double illumination, i.e. a bright strip, in the overlapping regions, it is proposed according to the invention to insert in the beam path of a slide projector a mask which covers a part of the beam path and thereby produces dimming in the edge regions that are projected overlapping. The respectively dimmed projected edge regions from two projectors then receive the desired illumination, which corresponds to the residual brightness of the total image. As a result, uniform brightness of the total image is achieved. In a preferred embodiment, a perforated mask carrier (42) is mounted with the aid of spring clips (46) on a condenser lens (37). A perforated mask (43), for example having a square opening (45), can be inserted into an annular opening (50) of the perforated mask carrier (42), which mask (43) covers a part of the beam path through the condenser lens (37). As a result, when a slide is projected, the edge regions are dimmed, so that it is therefore possible to carry out the soft edge method. <IMAGE>
