The ashtray contains, in a housing (1), a rotatable drum (3) with a slot-like aperture (5) in the outer surface for receiving ash and butts of cigarettes or the like. As a result of approximately a quarter-turn of the drum, the aperture is closed by a wall (4) surrounding the drum (3), so that a burning cigarette is extinguished because of lack of oxygen. If the drum (3) is turned further, the content of the drum falls into the ash chamber (2) which, in this drum position, remains sealed from the ambient air, so that the ashtray is largely odour-free. <IMAGE>
