A combustion engine attains optimum characteristics for driving motor vehicles, especially passenger vehicles, through combination with a rotary ram supercharger, according to European Patent Application A10012329, the advantages of which are fully exploited throughout the speed range. This supercharger feeds charging air to the engine under pressure throughout the operating range and also utilises the exhaust gas energy. At the same time according to the invention the engine exhaust gases are fed to the supercharger functioning exclusively on the displacement principle, modifying the engine compression range so that in order to fully utilise their energy they are further expanded in the expansion chambers of the supercharger, whilst at the same time charging air compression is initiated so that at full load connection to the engine compression line occurs in such a way that, despite the falling engine compression the final pressure of the original compression is achieved. In accordance with the enlargement of its compression chamber necessary for reduction of the engine compression, its output can be correspondingly increased, the engine characteristic at the same time being improved through better adjustment to the requirements of vehicle operation. Together with the increase in output and the reduction thereby possible in the engine speed, the specific fuel consumption is also significantly reduced by the optimum air ratio. Suitable technical solutions for implementing these possibilites are indicated both for petrol and for diesel engines, which lead to the favourable characteristic curves of a system of the type according to Fig.8.
