Process and apparatus for correcting the contour of a billet produced by continuous casting, developed on the basis of an analysis of the development mechanism of a deformation of the cross-sectional shape of the billet, an investigation of the cross-sectional shape of the billet and an investigation of the formation of a solidified outer layer of the billet in different sections of the billet cross-section. The direction in which the modification appears in a casting mould section is sensed immediately after the release of the billet from the casting mould section. Streams of cooling fluid are directed, concentrated on at least one of two corners of an upper side of the trapezoidal cross-section of the billet, when the angle of this corner has become greater than the angle of the corresponding corner of an inner surface of the casting wheel. The cooling of this corner is thereby accelerated for a continuance of the increase of its angle, and this angle is returned to a given value. The billet is thereby given the desired contour. The corner of the cross-section of a billet, whose angle is smaller than the given value, has a thickness of the solidified outer layer which is greater than the thickness of the solidified outer layer of that corner whose angle is greater than the given value. Such a local cooling of the corner with the increased angle is carried out in order to bring the thickness of the solidified outer layer to a level which is equal to the thickness of the solidified outer layer of the corner with the diminished angle, so that the cross-sectional shape of the billet can thereby be corrected by return of the angle of that corner with the increased angle to the given value.
