The retaining device is intended for the transport of grinding wheels (12) in vertical orientation by means of a crane or a travelling crab, for example from a grinding-wheel store to the grinding machine. Of the four retaining devices explained in the description, two are designed as metal shackles, one is designed as a pliable retaining band with stabilizer and one is designed as a flexurally rigid retaining trough. For the fastening of the metal shackle, a peripheral groove open essentially radially to the outside or inside is arranged on the peripheral or flange part of the wheel. A sharp edge of the shackle essentially adapted to the curvature of the groove root in one section can be inserted into the peripheral groove from below. In addition, the shackle contains a locking member which can be releasably placed against an upwardly pointing peripheral area of the wheel or the flange part. <IMAGE>
