Method and device for cutting a web in a winding machine for plastic films, with a contact roller (17) which presses the running web (1) against a winding tube (16) and with a cutting element which extends across the width of the web and consists of two parts which are moveable in relation to one another and to the web, namely a cutter support (21), provided with a blade (20), and a counter-element (26). The cutting edge of the blade (20) is moved in the immediate vicinity of the web surface, but at a distance from it, before cutting is carried out. Then the counter-element (26), which is provided with two stopping strips which are at a distance from one another and parallel to the blade (20), strikes the surface of the web. The blade (20) penetrates between the two stopping strips (27, 28) and in so doing performs the cutting operation. <IMAGE>
