A device for sealing off a vacuum space from a space at a relatively high pressure contains a liquid seal arranged between two components which can move relative to one another, the magnetisable sealing liquid being held magnetically in the sealing region. In order to make possible fault-free long-term operation of the sealing device, as required, for example, for superconducting turbo generators, it is provided according to the invention that the sealing region be connected to the vacuum space (5) via a restriction zone (15). The effective suction capacity (Se) at the liquid seal (14) is here to be reduced from a value (S1) of the suction capacity of the vacuum space (5) to a value Se </= 10<-2> . S1.
