The invention relates to a method and a device for taking accurate samples from melts by means of probes which dip into the melt. In order to improve the previous sampling methods and provide a highly accurate sample, the device is characterised in that a tube (8) is inserted into the inlet passage (6) and loosely held (13), leaving an interspace, the said tube projecting in a manner known per se beyond the end face (7) of the body (1) into the space formed by a sheet-metal cap (17) placed on the body (1) and being provided with a plug (15) in the inlet opening (16) such that the ingress of gases into the sample cavities is not delayed but that of the steel melt into the tube (8) is delayed briefly. <IMAGE>
