The invention relates to a method and apparatus used in implementing the method for taking samples when, for example, milk is transported by a pump to a collecting vessel, samples being taken at predetermined time intervals in connection with the collection for, for example, determining the fat content of the milk, the protein content and the presence of bacteria. Before each sample is taken, the pipe system is to be rinsed after the preceding milk sample. By means of the invention, part of the liquid flowing in the pipe system 21 is caused to flow through the pipe system 11', 11 of the sampling apparatus 8, the cover construction 10 of the sampling vessel 9, and valves 14, 16 on the inlet and outlet side of the vessel, to the receiving pipe system 3, 1, 4, it being possible, by controlling the functions of the valves 14, 16, to cause either a part or all of the liquid flowing in the sampling pipe system 11', 11 to flow into the sampling vessel. The flow of liquid into the sampling vessel 9 is controlled by means of a pipe 17 which passes through the cover construction 10, and of the valves 15, 16.
